What is civil engineering?

Civil engineering is one of the core engineering fields and it imparts the know-how for construction, management, and development of infrastructure. It is known to be the backbone of industrialization and the development of the world. It is also well known that construction is significant when it comes to development. The infrastructural framework to build a modern nation and creating dams, power plants, airports, highways, seaports, waterways, buildings, and homes are all part of civil engineering.

How to be a civil engineer?

To be a civil engineer you have to complete a degree or diploma course from a reputed university or institution, after which you earn a B.E./B.Tech. or diploma degree. While B.E./B.Tech. will take four years of education, diploma will take three years. If you wish, you can also pursue higher education and complete a master's course with a specialization.

What qualifications do you need?

Here you have two options: either you can go for a diploma or a degree course. If you want to pursue a diploma, then you have to complete class 10th with at least 50% aggregate marks. If you go for a degree course, you will also have to apply for an entrance test that is conducted at the state or national level. You will have to score the required marks that will earn you an admission in a reputed university. Besides, you have to complete your 12th class with physics, math and chemistry.

Academic program

The degree course will comprise eight semesters. Various subjects like math, chemistry, physics, graphics, engineering math, strength of materials, electrical systems, electronics, instrumentation, computer programming and many more are imparted in the four-year course. Every semester comes with a different syllabus, working up to more specialized ones.

There are many construction companies that offer a good salary even for freshers. Civil engineers are employed in all types of construction projects. Another attractive option is in the armed forces, where they can provide vital contribution and serve the country. Working overseas, especially the Middle East, is another option.

The salary depends on different factors like the size of the company you work in, the qualification you have, the experience, location of work, the size of the project, etc. The basic salary for a graduate who has earned a degree is around Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000. The increase will be gradual as you get more experience and knowledge. In the teaching field, the salaries are more attractive, and besides, you get paid vacations and many holidays. Civil engineers from India are highly in demand abroad as they come with advanced knowledge and skills. In such cases, the remuneration is naturally much higher.
