AMET University, Kanathur formally known as Academy of Maritime Education & Training was established in 1993. It is the only University of its kind in India that caters to the needs of Shipping Industry not just in India, but the world over.AMET is located on the beautiful shore of Bay of Bengal at Kanathur, just an hour’s drive from Chennai city. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar and is a state of the art establishment totally dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge and training to cadets and students. AMET is established as a private maritime institute through Smt.Pattammal Educational and Charitable Trust with just 14 cadets in 1993. AMET has, through its uncompromising strides of excellence and ambitious zeal to serve the students and nation, transformed into the first university for maritime education  in India under AMET Trust. (AMET) was granted the deemed to be University status by the UGC on 21st August 2007 under the “de-novo” category with maritime education as emerging field with great potential.The university was started with only 14 students; AMET maintained its continuous growth during the last 18 years to have strength of 2400 students on date undergoing various Diploma, Degree & Post Graduate Degree Courses. In providing Quality Assurance, AMET has obtained Certification to ISO 9001: 2000 Standards from Det Norske Veritas, Norway.

With his hallmark characteristics of passion for life and compassion for the living, the 2nd  Vice Chancellor of AMET University (Established as per Sec.3 of the UGC Act, 1956)  Col.Dr.G.Thiruvasagam has thrown himself heart and soul into the task of instilling excellence and quality in all aspects of life on campus.A person of academic and administrative eminence, Col.Dr.G.Thiruvasagam brings with him his dynamic experience of four decades, his keen sense of justice and his generous spirit of fraternity all of which served him well in a career spanning 34 years as Professor of Commerce and Management and 10 years as Principal and a stint as Member of the Syndicate of Madurai Kamaraj University that culminated in his being nominated as Vice Chancellor for two successive terms (between 2006-2012) of two eminent universities in Tamil Nadu namely  Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and the prestigious 155 year old first ‘Port’ University of India, the University of Madras.Hailing from the  small village, Siruvelangudi in Sivagangai district,  by dint of hard work and single-minded sense of purpose Col.Dr.G.Thiruvasagam obtained his Ph.D from Madurai Kamaraj University in  the discipline of Management, and later went on to do his post doctorate from Southampton University, United Kingdom. However he never forgot his roots and has spared no opportunity to work to uplift the downtrodden through a variety of schemes he initiated at every institution with which he was associated.
